ENG

Imrich Horváth (1912 – 1977) was a Czechoslovak soldier of Romany origin who came from the town of Seňa in eastern Slovakia. After the south east of Slovakia was occupied by Hungarian troops he was forced to enter the Hungarian army and to go and fight on the eastern front.

In 1943 he deserted and joined the Czechoslovak Military Brigade in the Soviet Union. He took an active part in the battle on the Ukrainian front for the Dukla pass.

In October 1944, after the uprising was put down, he was captured by a German unit and deported to a concentration camp in western Germany. When the Allied troops were approaching he escaped from the camp with a group of prisoners. He returned to the liberated Czechoslovakia with the US army.
